Help me design a dress for my winter formal?

A friends' mom is a extremely good sewer and can make me a dress for winter formal. Anyone have ideas for how to make it, I want to to look good on my pale skin, maybe dark purple, and show off my shoulders/back, and hit maybe just above the knee.

Have you browsed any formal wear/gowns or dressy dresses on the internet? That's a good place to start to get an idea of the STYLE you're looking for. There are so many dress styles; Empire waist, full skirted, A-Line, Sheath style, tank-top style, off the shoulder, etc...
Also, if you can, go to Bridal wear shops in your area and try on different styles & colors to see which compliments your complexion & your figure the best.

Next, go to the fabric store with your friend's mother and pick out a pattern that is closest to your favorite. Give her any pictures you have showing her details of the dress you like the most. Let her help you pick out the fabric that is the most suitable.

If your friend's mother is willing to make the dress for you, give her plenty of time to do it!!! And, be prepared for many "fittings" as she's progressing.
